Hair. We know it’s important. Those who don’t have it want it; and those who have it spend countless hours and thousands of dollars trying to get it just right. But while science continues to reveal an ever expanding list of the benefits of natural oils such as grapeseed oil, rosemary oil, argan oil and olive oil for hair care, too many of us are still overwhelmed (and confused?) by the hundreds of manmade chemicals available.

With this in mind, perhaps we’d all benefit from learning a bit more about our hair. The article below contains a number of facts (each in italics) about our hair, and over the next few weeks we will be learning several easy but effective tips for excellent hair care.

The average person loses about 100 hairs per day

That’s right. Hair loss is no stranger to each and every one of us. However, most people never notice the strands that fall daily, because hair is also the second fastest growing tissue in the human body (behind bone marrow). The average person grows 10 miles of hair each year.

But is hair loss really such a big deal? After all, give a person the choice and he or she would readily give up a few locks rather than lose a hand or a foot. At a superficial glance, hair may appear to be the least of anyone’s problems – that is, until we dig a bit deeper.

According to the hair experts at the Belgravia Centre, a significant percentage of men and women who suffer from alopecia (hair loss) would give up sex (30%) and their life savings (47%) for a full head of hair. An incredible 60% of hair loss sufferers would rather have more hair than more money or more friends.

The Centre also reports that one of the main contributors to hair loss is scalp dryness. What can person experiencing alopecia and seeking a treatment for hair loss do?  One highly recommended step is to use an argan oil shampoo, and use it regularly.

But doesn’t excessive washing cause hair loss? No it doesn’t!

The idea that regularly washing, blow drying or combing your hair may result in increased hair loss is one of the oldest myths around.

Dr. Elena Dimitrova, an expert in scalp and hair care, explains that it is good hygiene to wash hair regularly. However when using shampoos, it is important to concentrate on massaging and cleansing the scalp as shampoos may actually wash out important oils from your hair (in contrast, conditioners are good for your hair but may make your scalp greasy).

After using an argan oil shampoo, gently massage your scalp and strands with olive oil, rosemary oil, argan oil or grapeseed oil for hair growth and luster. These oils are excellent moisturizers which help to prevent and alleviate scalp dryness. Grapeseed oil has the added benefit of penetrating the hair shaft, and may serve as a carrier for the other nourishing natural oils.

Points to take home:

  • Regularly use a high quality shampoo on your scalp
  • Do not shampoo your hair
  • Use natural oils such as grapeseed oil for increased hair growth and scalp moisture
